10 Reasons KJMS Stands Out
High Quality Instruction
KJMS is dedicated to providing high-quality instruction that nurtures every student's academic and personal growth during these transformative years. With our team of world-class educators, we offer a blend of challenging coursework, individualized support, and engaging learning experiences designed to inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and a love for learning. We pride ourselves on providing a supportive environment where students are encouraged to explore their strengths and build the confidence and skills needed for future success.
After School Programs
The KJMS after school program participation rate among students is one of the highest in FCPS. We host 30+ clubs and activities including Science Olympiad, e-Cyber Missions, Model UN, Quiz Bowl, Math Counts, American Mathematics Competition 8 and 10, and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). Many of these clubs participate and are highly successful in local, state, and national competitions.
Performing Arts
Our performing arts (band, chorus, orchestra) all earned Virginia Band & Orchestra Directors Association (VBODA) Blue Ribbon status, superior ratings at assessments, and first place at Music in the Parks. Students audition and are admitted to district and All-State Honors Ensembles.
Athletics
Our competitive athletic teams include cross country, and track and field, as well as girls and boys teams that participate in basketball, futsal, and volleyball in the Western Fairfax middle school sports league.
Environmental Recognition
KJMS is recognized as a Virginia Naturally School and has received the Eco School USA Green Flag Award. We were the first school in Virginia and third in the nation to receive the Eco School USA Green Flag award in 2010, and we have maintained this status every year since then!
Purple Star Status
We are a proud Purple Star School. This designation from the Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children recognizes KJMS’ dedication to helping military-connected students and their families.
A Passionate and Talented Team
KJMS staff are committed to ensuring that every student is prepared to reach their greatest potential. Our talented team includes six National Board Certified teachers (Mrs. Alam, Mr. Burts, Ms. Rose, Ms. Wright, Mr. Hutson, Mrs. Ranallo), Fred Rogers Institute Helper Awards Inaugural Winner (Mr. Haapapuro), FCPS Region 5 Outstanding New Teacher (Ms. Matthews), and United States Institute of Peace Teachers Program (Ms. Al Mukhtar). Our school counselors have earned the Recognized American School Counselors Association Model Program designation. If you’re interested in joining our team, find out why KJMS is a great place to work!
Strong Community Partnerships
We appreciate our community partners who are dedicated to supporting our students’ success. As an example, Fairfax Bible Church, Generosity Feeds, and Food for Neighbors offer meaningful service learning opportunities for KJMS students including helping to provide food for families in need.
Special Events
KJMS hosts multiple events such as Curriculum Night, Family Night, RISE program, EagleFest, Back to School Night, and English Language Learner (ELL) Potluck. These popular gatherings welcome students and families to KJMS and foster a strong sense of community.
College and Career Readiness
KJMS offers college and career readiness by offering Advancement VIA Individual Determination (AVID), an Early Identification Program partnership with George Mason University, a Teaches for Tomorrow partnership with Fairfax High School, and Career Day.
